Diving Fractions
Today in class, we were learning about reciprocals. And we have to show how to solve this question. So to start off, I'll show you an example of how to solve this.
Example question: 2/3 ÷ 3/4.
Rule: copy-change-flip.
How to solve: 2/3-----> copy
÷/*-----> change
4/3 ------> flip.
What did I do?
1.Copy 2/3 exactly the same.
2. Changed the division sign to a multiplication sign because we're doing the reciprocal.
3. Flip 3/4 around and made it into 4/3/ (reciprocal)
How to solve: Just multiply across and simplify afterwards if needed.
2/3 times 4/3= 8/9 (2*4=8 and 3*3=9) '
Answer: 8/9
Now I'll show you how to solve 3/4 ÷1/8. So it's technically the same as the example I did on top, but now, we're just doing it with different fractions.
Question: What's 3/4 ÷ 1/8? (HOMEWORK)
Rule: copy-change-flip
Apply it to numbers:
3/4------> Copy (Same)
*/÷ --------> change
1/8-----> 8/1 flip.
How to solve: Multiply strait across, then simplify if needed.
3/4 times 8/1= 24/4
How to simplify: Think, How many times does 4 go into 24?
Answer: 6
Answer to Homework: 3/4 times 8/1= 24/4= 6
